New pocket-friendly solar panel promises to keep your phone from running out of batteryThe World’s most compact solar charger rolls out on Kickstater on Nov. 9 2015
Out of battery.. Again! It’s an all too common situation: You grab for your phone in a moment of need, only to find it dead and unresponsive. Or, you’re waiting for that one important call while feverishly looking at a red battery indicator. Well that wait might just be over with the arrival of the HeLi-on, a super compact solar charger for your pocket. That is the aim of the Danish start-up company infinityPV, with the launch of a crowdfunding campaign on Monday November 9, on kickstarter.com.
Using a powerful and flexible solar panel, the Danish-developed HeLi-on makes phone charging on-the-go a breeze. The panel is assisted by a built-in rechargeable battery that ensures power even on a cloudy day. Besides being useful in everyday life, HeLi-on is a perfect fit for those situations where you don’t have a wall plug around, such as hiking and camping trips.
While you might have seen other solar charges around, you won’t have seen the likes of HeLi-on, ensures Morten Madsen, one of the entrepreneurs behind the product: “Using our new solar cell technology, we have made the HeLi-on much more compact than existing products. Our design simply makes the solar panel an extension of your smartphone, enabling you to charge anywhere.”
Greener than you average green-tech
The solar panel inside the HeLi-on is all new energy technology, developed by infinityPV. The panel is made of so-called polymer solar cells; a name that lends to the fact that the main materials used are different kinds of plastics. Such solar cells are both flexible, they bend and roll, but also afford environmentally friendliness as CEO of infinityPV Frederik Krebs explains: “Our polymer solar cells makes for an entirely new approach to solar cells; the materials and production methods we use leads to a very low environmental impact compared to other types of solar cells”.
Celebrated danish solar tech
infinityPV was founded in 2014, backed by a number of patents related so polymer solar cell technology. Later this year infinityPV won an award in the 2015 Emerging Technology Showcase of the British Royal Society of Chemistry. “As a scientist it is highly rewarding to see how your academic research leads to actual technology that can make a difference. With our company infinityPV we have taken this step into our own hands,” explains Frederik Krebs. With the launch of their Kickstarter-campaign, the team behind HeLi-on hopes to spark a global interest and get the needed funding to bring the solar charger to the market.
